It had been five months since Hilda got the news about Dough, Hilda and Ellen are still heart-broken.
Weird looking rockets,V1, attacked London destroying homes and killing people.Hilda was terrified, and couldn't leave Ellen out of her sight. Gertie visits them one day, when she sees the danger Ellen is in she offers Hilda a cottage in Hampshire that belongs to a friend without any rent in return, and promises to get the keys as soon as she talks to the cottage owner. Hilda appreciated it even though she didn't like living out of London but she knew she had to for the sake of her daughter.
Hilda was relieved that they're safe now,but missed Mable.Ellen was leaving school at the end of the term because she hadn't passed the examinations, and was going to start working since they could really use some more money right now.Mable and Billy arrive to Hampshire , Percy didn't want to abandon his job but forces his mom and brother to leave because of a more frightening rocket that had started attacking London.
Mable likes it there on the contrary to Billy who just wants to go back to London.Ellen was annoyed from Billy at first but started noticing how good looking he is.
There was a significant change in Billy,he started working at the stables, which he loved to do that he started spending more time there. One day when Ellen was on her way to her job,she is amazed by a familiar face who then turns out to be her dad. They go back home, and Hilda is extremely exultant and feels like part of
her came alive.Dough explains how his ship went down and he grabbed a wooden piece and started paddling away from the ship and a U-boat surfaced and started firing the men and he got shot in the head and his back, and then an American ship picked him up and was taken to the hospital. He had a memory loss and it took time until he recovered and then came looking for them.
Ellen couldn't stop thinking of the woman who had the vision about Dough and had many questions she wanted answers to.This is why Sheila, her friend, took her to a woman who reads some kind of stones. After studying the stones Ellen was told that " You have traveled, and you will travel again.Much is before you: happiness, pain and grief. Your search will continue, until one day you will be given a sign that will at last bring you peace." Ellen and sheila then hurried out.Mable was told that the owner of the stables Billy worked at was offering Billy a place to live in if his mom left when the war ends, but she disagreed on leaving him behind.Billy was mad and stormed out of the house,Ellen followed him. They had a little chat but then were interrupted by Sheila who couldn't take her eyes off Billy and neither could he,Ellen feeling jealous left them and went back home.
Dough tried convincing Hellen to explain to Ellen about the facts of life but she refused, not like it mattered since Sheila told her all about it on their way to work after apologizing to Ellen for flirting with Billy.
Mable gets a letter from Jack that he got wounded and was going back home.Wanting to be there when he arrived, she immediately started packing and Dough went on to get Billy back home. But of course Billy wouldn't stop whining about not wanting to go back home.Ellen says goodbye but doesn't want Billy to leave and then goes to Sheila's,but not wanting her to see him, Ellen lies and says that he had left eariler.
The war has stopped and they now had to go back to London.Hellen not wanting to leave because she believed that all that London had given her was sadness tried to make up excuses for Dough to stay. But he was persuasive and told her they had to leave.Ellen knew she'd miss Hampshire but was excited to leave.Dough couldn't stop thinking about his back condition and how it's getting worse.
When they arrived Hellen sent Ellen to get some milk and tea from Mable,Ellen took it as an opportunity to talk to Billy. They talked and as she left he winked at her and she took it as a sign that he might like her too.Billy didn't notice up til now that Ellen's actually pretty. He was a van boy now but was determined to go back to working at the stable no matter how much his dad refuse to let him do so.
Ellen started working at a grocery shop, and with Dough's damaged back he could barely move,Hellen then knew she had to find a job,but Dough didn't like the idea of his wife working but Hellen was determined because there was no other way.Ellen had gone to help Percy to grow the seedlings someone had given him at the factory.Jack,Mable and Billy were arguing because of Billy's irresponsibility but then considered sending him back to Hampshire which sent Ellen into tears.Percy noticed that Ellen had a crush on Billy,he fantasized about dating her but knew he had to wait until she was older. When Ellen found out that Jack had given in and agreed on Billy leaving, she couldn't bear it.
Hellen had found a job next to Ellen's.When they got back from work one day they found Gertie there waiting for them. They were pleased to see her,she told them how she is selling her dad's house and that she had met someone and wanted to introduce her soon.As Gertie left she wasn't very happy with the condition they were in and wanted to help them in some way.
